Meet
Insurance Agent/Financial Consultant Cathy Shadwick
Cathy Shadwick’s insurance agency is more than just a place
to buy car, home or life insurance. It happens to be a
one-stop shop for not only your insurance needs, but most
likely all your financial services needs as well. That is
because Cathy is a chartered financial consultant with a
full range of financial services offerings through State
Farm, including State Farm Bank.
Cathy has been an insurance agent for 19 years,
after having worked in child welfare and elementary school
special education. When she and her family relocated to
Florida from southern California in 1980, she wanted
part-time work so she could be home with her kids after
school. She went into real estate, but soon learned “you
can’t do real estate part-time.” She did do it for nearly
eight years, then, utilizing her skills from having handled
the insurance for her husband’s business, she started her
State Farm agency.
“Middle
America is extremely underserved in financial services,
particularly sound financial advice,” Cathy says.
“Traditionally, wealthier people have better access to
financial planners and receive more financial advice than
Middle America.
Women, too, are underserved. I often see married women who
let their husbands take care of all the finances. In
addition, many women don’t or can’t concern themselves with
their retirement. Women generally earn less than men and
have fewer working years, so their Social Security is lower.
Consequently, women end up short for retirement income.”
Cathy
says she enjoys helping people evaluate their insurance
coverage and look at their overall risk, coupled with
planning financially for retirement. Her business emphasizes
personal service and to that end she employs four full-time
and three part-time people, and is seeking two more
full-time employees.
Cathy’s
two children are grown and married and her daughter blessed
Cathy last year with the first grandchild. In addition to
visiting with family, Cathy, who was born and raised in
Iowa, enjoys gardening and traveling. One of her favorite
recent trips was a week sailing in the Caribbean. She and
her husband rendezvoused with friends they have known for 40
years in the British Virgin Islands, where they chartered a
boat.
