Meet
Counselor/Coach Sara Fackelman
Sara
Fackelman has culled a lifetime of experience into a lifework
centered on helping others move their lives forward and
achieving their highest potential. For she knows what it is
like to not be living her own best life. She was married for
22 years and for much of that time ran her husband’s
trucking company. Eventually she knew this was not the life
for her.
She
returned to college and earned a bachelor’s degree in
religious studies. Her plan was to become a rabbi, but her
first job out of college was working at a facility for
juveniles. She loved it and counseling became her career
orientation. After several counseling jobs at other facilities
and nonprofits, she went back to school and earned a doctorate
in addictions counseling. Then, with apparent energy left
over, she went on to earn a master’s degree in community
psychology.
Now
Sara has a private practice in
Tampa
and
Plant City
and subcontracts with Psychological Management Group in
Tampa
, where she specializes in addictions, grief and loss,
domestic violence, and gay and lesbian couples therapy.
Additionally, she teaches psychology classes and “Strategies
for Success” at
Florida
Metropolitan
University
, a class especially designed for older students returning to
the classroom. A strong believer in “giving back to the
community, especially since I’ve never had children,” she
also volunteers at the
Life
Center
in
Tampa
, where she leads groups dealing with grief, loss, chronic
illness, and parents who have lost a child.
Sara
was born in
Long Island
,
New York
, but moved to central
Florida
at age 8 when her Navy officer dad was assigned there, and has
resided in
Florida
since. She acquired her friendliness and warmth during her
early years when the family moved often and warming up to new
people was a matter of survival for Sara.
Sara
has been in a monogamous lesbian relationship for 14 years.
Her partner, Brenda, has just retired and was also a substance
abuse counselor. In their
Plant City
home, they care for Brenda’s infirm mother, who now lives
with them, and two dogs and three cats – all rescue animals.
Sara loves to garden, landscape, and work with wood. She will
tackle just about anything, and recently finished rebuilding
the deck behind the house.
It’s
hard to imagine when she finds the time, but Sara also sings
with Crescendo, a womyn’s chorus, and she participates in
events at the Tampa MCC church
