Meet
Hypnotherapist Mary Ramsay
A life
threatening illness at age 21 was Mary Ramsay’s wake-up call
that there is more to life than just being a sedentary
“head” person. Always technically inclined, Mary was working
as a draftsperson for a ship builder in her native Scotland
and leading a totally sedentary lifestyle with no outside
interests, other than music and singing, when she was struck
down. The illness forced her to re-examine her life and she
realized that her extreme lack of activity was literally
killing her. She became involved in physical fitness and
started doing things she had never done before such as
swimming, practicing jiu-jitsu, fencing, and most
importantly, yoga, “the activity that most turned my life
around.”
Yoga
helped her to start seeing life in metaphysical terms, and
she eventually developed an interest in human behavior. Her
husband’s work moved them to Canada where Mary started her
formal study of behavioral psychology and adult education.
Subsequently, she was a control and instrumentation designer
for a nuclear power plant, but continued studying and
teaching adults. When she left the technical world in the
mid-1980s, she devoted her career to counseling, where, she
says, all her studies and skills came to fruition.
Mary
retired in 1996 and spent five years back in
Britain
caring for her ailing mother. After her mother passed away
in 2002, Mary and her husband settled in Largo, where they
had previously enjoyed a second home.
Mary is a
certified hypnotherapist and has a private practice in
Largo, specializing in smoking cessation, stress management,
and life skills. She also addresses sleep disorders, weight
control, and anxiety disorders. For smoking cessation, Mary
uses a powerful program created by Smoke Free International.
SFI was founded by a former smoker who finally managed to
stop smoking with the help of hypnosis, and it combines
hypnosis and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) techniques
to achieve smoking cessation in one hour – which the program
guarantees for life! The only requirement on the part of the
client is that she or he must be self motivated and truly
want to stop smoking.
For the
other work in her practice, Mary uses the Emotional Freedom
Technique (EFT), another powerful method of ridding oneself
of emotional pain, which often leads to physical healing;
kinesiology (muscle testing); The Silva Method; or a
combination of these in conjunction with hypnosis.
Mary
knows firsthand the pain caused by the smoking habit. Not
because she herself smoked, but because she watched her
father die from smoking-related cancer. She finds her work
these days much more rewarding compared to her techie days.
“It is exhilarating to see the look in a client’s eyes or on
face when they realize that what we have done has been
successful,” May says.
In her
spare time, Mary keeps very busy reading, knitting, sewing,
painting, writing, weight training, and practicing yoga.
