Meet
Insurance Agency Owner Lizette Cochran
A native of
Puerto
Rico, Lizette Cochran moved to Florida to attend the
University of Florida, where she also learned conversational
English while going to college. That hard-working spirit
comes to Lizette naturally as the daughter, niece and
granddaughter of entrepreneurs who all owned their own
businesses. “Growing up with all the significant people in
my life owning their own businesses, I was just naturally
always business oriented,” says Lizette, who earned a
business degree with a major in marketing.
After college, Lizette worked briefly at a bank,
handling new accounts, then went to work for State Farm as
an auto claims adjustor. Three years later, she was tapped
to become an insurance agent and start up her own agency. In
the last 18 years, her agency had grown to employ four
full-time insurance agents, who also offer the myriad
financial services of State Farm. Three years ago Lizette
purchased land and built offices in
East
Lake, in close proximity to Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas
counties.
Lizette has her Series 6 license, which enables
her to integrate advising on the purchase of mutual funds
with overall financial planning, including insurance needs.
She appreciates the importance of looking at the whole
picture. For example, she may consider insurance needs,
savings and retirement needs when helping a client arrange
her financial affairs, always keeping in mind the importance
of being able to recover from the unexpected.
Lizette also enjoys working with small business
owners in setting up retirement plans, pension plans, and
IRA and 401k plans, and is passionate about empowering
women, in particular. “So many women don’t take the time to
take care of themselves financially,” Lizette says, “or they
delegate it to the husbands and then they don’t have full
knowledge of the arrangements. I am even teaching this to my
10-year-old daughter so she knows she never has to be
dependent on someone else.”
Lizette and her optometrist husband have two
active and busy children, aged 10 and 12. Lizette is very
involved in her kids’ school activities and is a major event
sponsor at
East
Lake
High School.
The family enjoys traveling and has visited places all
around the world on summer vacations. Weekends will often
find them cruising around Tampa Bay, exploring offshore
islands in their 36-foot boat.
