Meet ‘We The People’ Owner
Janet W. Brooks
In her
twenties, Janet Brooks was a fine arts major; in her
thirties, a technical illustrator for civil engineers; in
her forties, she and her husband sailed around the
Caribbean; and in her fifties, she is a new business owner.
Janet’s business, We The People, is a legal document
preparation service, and follows on the heels of Janet
working in real estate since her move to
St.
Petersburg
in 1999.
Her
husband took an early retirement from Abbott Pharmaceuticals
and in 1996 they left the life they knew in Austin, Texas,
and simply sailed off for parts unknown. It was the
adventure of a lifetime and after three years, the couple
felt it was time to get back to work. A year after they
first sailed under the Sunshine Skyway bridge, Janet had her
real estate license. When the bottom fell out of the real
estate market early this year, she looked into buying an
existing business but eventually decided on buying a
franchise.
Helping
people to prepare the legal documents that they need
appealed to Janet for the same reasons she enjoyed real
estate. “I like giving people something they need and I like
demystifying things for people.” Legal documents can
certainly require demystifying! Lucky for the rest of us
that there are people like Janet and We The People who can
offer the right guidance on what forms and procedures are
necessary to take care of simple legal matters.
Many
folks, says Janet, do not know that they have the
constitutional right to represent themselves by filing their
own living trusts, wills, powers of attorney, name changes,
and incorporations, among other things. Even if they do know
they can prepare such documents themselves, facing the task
can be intimidating. That’s where We The People comes in.
The company is a national chain that was founded in 1985 to
serve people who cannot or choose not to pay the high cost
of attorney fees. “It is the only national chain providing
high quality, affordable, legal document preparation to
consumers who choose to represent themselves in uncontested
legal matters,” according to their Web site,
www.wethepeopleusa.com.
The big
boat is gone, and Janet and her husband of 23 years now have
a little run-about from which they can go beaching and
fishing. Life at home revolves around two rescued
Schipperkes, the smallest of the Belgian Shepard dogs. “They
are very smart, very stubborn, and very protective,”
says Janet. “We are very happy in our new life here.”
